The Progressive Era
Review
1. Two reforms from the progressive era that had a direct affect on the voting population were the secret ballot and direct primaries.
2. Explain the importance of each of the Four Amendments from this time period?
16th – Federal Income Tax
17th – Direct Election of Senators
18th – Prohibition of alcohol
19th – Women get the right to vote / suffrage
3. A graduated income tax is when the tax rate increases in proportion to the income of the individual.
4. Theodore Roosevelt is the president most commonly identified with the Progressive Era.
5. The Progressive view of man is that man is naturally good, which is not what the Bible teaches.
6. It was thought that by increasing government, government would be controlled and man would be controlled – but this was not so.
7. Some good things that came out of the progressive era were the
Panama Canal,
airplanes,
automobiles,
foreign policy,
better working conditions,
better food requirements,
NAACP,
greater participation in government.
8. The downside of the progressive movement:
increase in government power
increase in size of government
shift in the role of government
protection of government from public control
development of the idea of evolution
9. Understand and be able to explain the different approaches taken by Booker T. Washington and the NAACP in working toward equality for African Americans.
